Electronic profits tax filing involves the return, authorisation and supporting documents in the formats required by the IRD. It is not simply emailing a scanned paper form.
Check the applicable route Review the current Business Tax Portal and Tax Representative Portal guidance and whether electronic filing is mandatory for the company's circumstances. The mandatory regime is phased, so not every small company has identical obligations merely because a new system exists.
Prepare supporting files Financial statements and tax computations may need iXBRL tagging under current requirements, subject to applicable exceptions. Agree who prepares and validates the files. A PDF readable to a person may not satisfy a structured submission requirement.
Confirm access and authority Set up the correct company and representative permissions before the deadline. Do not share director credentials with an unverified intermediary. Keep control of recovery methods and know who approves the final submission.
Retain proof Save the return, attachments, validation information and acknowledgement. Check rejection messages and confirm successful submission rather than treating an attempted upload as completion.
For a first electronic filing, arrange a readiness check while the accountant prepares the figures. Leaving access and file conversion until the final day adds an avoidable operational problem to an important deadline.
