What Is an MCC? Merchant Category Code Explained

An MCC, or merchant category code, classifies a merchant's business activity within card payment arrangements. It is distinct from the wording used to market the brand to customers.

Who determines it The acquiring or payment provider assigns or validates the appropriate classification through its process. The merchant should describe its real products and delivery model accurately.

Why it matters Classification can influence eligibility, risk treatment and how some card transactions are handled. The exact effects depend on the provider and payment arrangements. A code is not proof that the business holds a required licence.

A practical example A company approved for one service later starts selling materially different products. It may need to notify the provider and have its activity reviewed rather than assuming the original classification covers everything.

If a category appears incorrect, request a review with clear product evidence. Do not seek an inaccurate code to bypass restrictions or conceal the real activity. Correct classification helps keep the customer experience, provider record and commercial operation consistent.
