Hong Kong company records can contain both an older company registration number and the business registration number now used as the unique business identifier. Seeing two numbers in an older document pack does not necessarily mean one is fraudulent or that two different companies are involved.
Start with the document date The Companies Registry adopted the business registration number as its unique business identifier on 27 December 2023. Historical certificates and correspondence may still show the earlier company number. Check the issue date and the label beside a number before copying it into an application.
Use the Registry's search services to connect the current record with the company's identity. Do not guess an identifier from an invoice, website footer or similar company name. Search results should be checked against the legal name and other corporate particulars.
Complete provider forms carefully A provider may still label a field “company registration number” even when it expects the current identifier. Follow the field instructions and ask support if the required format conflicts with the issued documents. Entering random extra digits to satisfy a form can make verification harder.
Maintain a reference sheet Keep the legal company name, incorporation date, current business identifier and relevant historical number in one internal record. Link each entry to the document supporting it. For example, an older supplier contract can retain its original details while your current onboarding file explains the identifier transition.
The identifier is an administrative reference, not evidence of a licence, creditworthiness or bank approval. When checking a counterparty, review its current company status and the commercial relationship as well as matching its number.
