Business Registration Number vs Company Registration Number in Hong Kong

The distinction between Hong Kong's business registration number and company registration number has changed with the unique business identifier system. Older advice telling founders to use two entirely separate current numbers can therefore be misleading.

Understand the historical distinction Company registration identifies the incorporated entity in Registry records. Business registration concerns registration with the Inland Revenue Department. The business registration number is now used by the Companies Registry as the unique business identifier, while historical documents can still contain the old company number.

This change does not merge the incorporation certificate and business registration certificate into one document. They continue to serve different purposes. A bank may reasonably request both even though the identifier system is more consistent.

Check what the recipient needs Before entering a number, read whether the recipient wants the core business identifier, a certificate number or a branch related reference. Copy from the relevant issued record and retain the formatting required by the form. Do not remove or add digits merely because another website used a different format.

Resolve an apparent mismatch Prepare a short note naming the company, listing the document dates and explaining the old and current references. Attach the official supporting records through the recipient's secure process. An ownership or name discrepancy should be investigated separately rather than blamed automatically on the identifier change.

For internal administration, label fields clearly as current BRN and historical company number where applicable. This prevents accountants, staff and application agents from repeatedly exchanging the wrong reference and reduces unnecessary verification queries.
