Gateway, merchant account and business account describe different roles in the route from checkout to usable company money. They may be bundled commercially, but the distinctions remain useful when reviewing a provider proposal.
Three questions to ask The gateway question is: how does the customer submit payment and how does the website receive the result? The merchant arrangement question is: under what terms is the business accepted to process payments? The business account question is: where will settled funds go and how will the company spend them?
Follow one illustrative sale A customer buys a €100 product through the website. The payment flow obtains the relevant authorisation and confirmation. The processor records fees and any adjustments, then includes the available amount in a payout. The business account receives that payout, which may combine many sales.
That example explains why a checkout screenshot, processor balance and bank statement can show different figures without any of them necessarily being wrong.
Review the interfaces between services Check supported currencies, account holder matching, transaction references, payout schedules and refund funding. Confirm who resolves a missing payment at each stage. Where separate providers are involved, retain the identifiers needed to trace the transaction between them.
Use this functional map when comparing bundled and separate solutions. A business needs a complete working route, not necessarily three separately purchased products. Ask the provider to identify which roles it supplies and which still need to be arranged elsewhere.
