A merchant category code classifies a merchant's business activity within card payment arrangements. It can influence how transactions are treated, but it is not a marketing label the company should select to obtain cheaper or less restricted processing.
Describe the actual business The acquiring or payment provider determines the appropriate classification using its process. Give a precise description of the main products and delivery model. If several materially different activities exist, explain them rather than presenting only the least complicated one.
Why classification matters Category can affect eligibility, risk treatment or customer card behaviour. The exact effect depends on the provider and card arrangements. Do not assume a particular code guarantees approvals, tax treatment or a specific fee.
Review changes in activity A company initially selling consulting services may later launch a different product. Notify the provider where required and ask whether its classification or eligibility needs review. The original code should not be treated as permanent permission for unrelated sales.
Correct errors with evidence If the company appears misclassified, provide clear product information and supporting records through the provider's review process. Ask for a written explanation of the outcome.
Do not seek a deliberately inaccurate category to bypass restricted activity rules. That can create problems with the provider relationship and disputes. The practical objective is a category consistent with the business customers actually encounter and the activity the provider has agreed to support.
